Top 10 Places to Shop for Decorating an Airbnb

With the recent release of our latest project, Fairview Airbnb - a 1920s farmhouse reimagined into an incredible family retreat, we wanted to share with you our top 10 “Go To” places to source decor for Airbnb projects.

When it comes to short term rental design, many feel as though they should decorate their spaces as neutral as possible. Perhaps it’s because they don’t feel comfortable designing, or they feel the more neutral the environment the wider the audience they will reach and attract. I disagree. Folks looking to book a short term rental don’t want a hotel experience. They are looking for personalization. With how popular Airbnb’s are today, in order to attract potential guests you NEED TO STAND OUT. That first photo is everything. Sure your location needs to be good and you have to have a place with a lot to offer, however, I truly believe good design and professional photography will help you stand out instantly. It’s the greatest investment you can make. What’s the old saying “You have to spend money to make money”? BINGO.

Unlike residential interior styling, some folks may want to be more conservative when it comes to spending for their short term rental investment. When a revolving door of guests are putting nonstop wear and tear on your furniture, why spend money on anything nice? I completely get it. However, I’m here to tell you that you can still get quality pieces at affordable prices. In fact, you should. It’s all about searching in the right places.

With all that being said, I wanted to share my personal favorite places to shop for Short Term Rental projects in hopes it will inspire you to step it up a notch! These places have good designs that pack a punch at prices that won’t break the bank.

  1. Home Goods

ALL HAIL HOME GOODS! For those that know me or have worked with me, you know how much I love Home Goods. Luckily, they are located in most major cities and are an excellent resource for all things Short Term Rental. This is really a one stop shop for furnishings, decor, cookware, linens and bath items. Personally, I like to come here to fill up my kitchen supplies, accent pillows, art and decorative objects.

2. Society 6

Designed by artists all over the world, Society 6 sells original artwork in a variety of forms, from wall art to rugs to throw pillows. Their art selection is vibrant and fun, which does great in adding personality to short term rentals. Remember to think outside the box when it comes to adding art to your space - this is your chance to use those funky prints you may not be bold enough to use in your own home. Make an “Instagrammable” moment that your guests will want to share!

3. Rugs USA

Rugs are one of the simplest ways to transform a space, both visually and functionally. Short term rentals often look cold and bare in a hosts attempt to keep them easy to clean, but what guests really want is a cozy home away from home! Rugs USA is a great online source for rugs of all sizes, styles and patterns at a great price point.

4. Brooklinen

Brooklinen is one of my favorite sources for bedding period, but especially for Airbnb bedding. Guests can tell the difference in a good quality set of sheets when they slip into the covers at night, and Brooklinen makes them for a reasonable price. I suggest sticking to white sheets for the clean look and ease of laundering - hello bleach.

5. Minimal & Modern

This is where people think they have to break the bank to fully furnish a rental. Tasteful, modern furniture can be expensive to source which is why I love Minimal & Modern for Short Term Rentals. From boucle swivel chairs to velvet mid-century modern sofas, this vendor has unique and affordable furniture for every style.

6. Wayfair

When searching for a particular style of furniture on a budget, Wayfair is a great option. From traditional to trendy, they sell great-priced alternatives of many expensive brands. For rentals I recommend checking out their outdoor furniture and any larger items you are sourcing online because of their free shipping - a huge plus!

7. Article

Leather sofas are often a great choice for Airbnbs as they hold up nicely even with the wear and tear of constant guests. However many owners shy away due to the higher price tags. Article is one vendor I would check specifically for sofas and accent chairs as they offer some high-end styles at better prices.

8. World Market

I love looking over World Market’s selection of lighting, baskets, and decor when sourcing for Short Term Rentals. They have that earthy, well-traveled feel that can add some great global flair to any space.

9. Target

Once I have my furniture and decor, I love Target for gathering needed housewares, cookware, and bath essentials for guests. If I am still missing some final touches, I do a quick scan of their throw pillows, wall mirrors, and framed art and usually walk out with other great finds.

10. Antique Stores

Finally, antique shops are the perfect spot to grab one-of-a-kind treasures that will really make your listing pop. Layer in vintage framed art, Turkish rugs, antique crocks for cooking utensils, unique nightstands and end tables. The beautiful thing about pre-loved wooden tables or chairs is the more guests use them, the more character they’ll have! No need to worry about every little nick or scratch as they’re already perfectly imperfect.
